Opera singing caregiver appears on TV

15 March 2021

A caregiver, who works for home care company Home Instead, made her TV debut on BBC Breakfast as part of the Department of Health and Social Care’s campaign to encourage more people to work in care.

Siân Dicker joined presenters Louise Minchin and Dan Walker (virtually) on Breakfast’s famous red sofa to talk about how she has changed career from being a full-time professional opera singer to working as a caregiver for the Home Instead Ruislip & Harrow franchise.

Well-known choreographer and presenter, Arlene Phillips, who was interviewed alongside Siân, discussed the tremendous care her father, who had been living with dementia, had received from adult social care and was keen to support the Department of Health and Social Care’s campaign.

Arlene also spoke of the concerns of those who worked in theatres, with many of those in the entertainment sector being out of work during the pandemic and that many are now nervous about the future.

Sian explained how she found out about Home Instead and their caring vacancies, and instantly applied. She loves her new role, enthusiastically explaining the care she provides for the six clients she visits each day, with support ranging from help with their morning routines, housework, and importantly- companionship.

She said “As an opera singer the biggest part of what we do is about communicating with an audience and being able to make a difference within that experience.

“Within the care sector its basically the same thing but just on a different scale. It’s really about the little differences we are able to make to someone’s day; the little bits of help we’re able to give them that have a huge impact on their quality of life, and that’s so rewarding.”

Due to an increasingly ageing population, the social care sector is very much in demand. Home Instead provides a wealth of support to their franchise owners to help with their recruitment including HR and legal support, as well as a wealth of marketing and PR such as the ‘You Can Care’ recruitment campaign.
