Ekko launches major recycling franchising drive for entrepreneurs


Ekko Waste Management is launching a major franchising programme which will roll its carbon-saving expertise across the UK.

The Ayr-based innovative and fast-growing recycling expert, provides glass crushing machines and a collection service to the leisure sector. 

Ekko is giving entrepreneurs the chance to share in its burgeoning fortunes by owning and operating an Ekko Glass Crush & Collect franchise.

The move will greatly expand Ekko's impressive client portfolio, which already includes some of the country’s biggest leisure chains and hotel groups, including Mitchell & Butler, Turnberry Hotel & Spa, Crowne Plaza Hotel, Malmaison, Hotel du Vin, the O2 ABC, the Edinburgh Fringe, Alea Casino, Network Rail and Rangers Football Club.

Franchisees will be able to gain immediate entry to a major growth market which is estimated to be worth £2.64 billion annually and increasing all the time as the economic and social benefits of recycling become ever more apparent.

Ekko Glass Crush & Collect franchises are at the forefront of this growing sector, providing innovative answers to many of the problems associated with recycling glass. Its glass crushing machines reduce glass bottles to one fifth of their original volume, and the residue, or cullet, is collected and sent for processing.

Uniquely, the Ekko system produces cullet which is suitable for optical sorting, meaning that mixed colour glass cullet can be recycled back into bottles and jars.

Ekko, which turns over £300,000 and employs five people, has stolen a march on competitors and gained a valuable marketing lead by employing existing glass crushing concepts, but making the machines which do the job reliable, safe and portable.

For the licensed trade particularly, this means that premises can dispense with large, unsightly bins which helps them avoid kerbside fines and penalties and improves relations with neighbours by reducing glass collection noise.

Franchisees at Ekko will be provided with "whole life support" which means that they will be helped to research the market in their desired territory, assess the competition,
analyse the potential earnings and helped to write a business plan to secure any necessary funding.

A high performing franchise will have the potential, depending on the number of customers serviced, to achieve turnover of £345,000 and an approximate net annual profit of £97,000.

Start-up costs are likely to be in the region of £55,000 and Ekko will be able to advise on financing.
